RE: Cummins Cooling System Flush

Listen to what wolfe10 said...
Search his post on this in the past.
In my previous MH, I followed his
directions and was done in a few hours.
It was easy but time consuming.
You can do it yourself.
My total cost was $150 including distill
water and 6yr/600k OAT coolant Finalcharge.
I needed 48 quarts.

RE: Aqua Hot System?

Boy, i LOOOOVE the aqua hot. It is basically forced hot water system, like in the stick house. I have had forced air (propane) before and i am not going back. There is no cold spots in the MH. I like how silently it keeps the MH warm. It does give out diesel exhaust but is no different than generator exhaust. One can use Genturi to route the exhaust above MH, if one wants to be a good neighbor. And when serviced properly you don't smell it. Most high end MH comes with Aqua Hot as standard unless the customer asks for something different. There is a version of aqua hot (different manufacturer) that is now propane fired and hence no smell. The propane version is much cheaper ($5k vs $9k)that the diesel fired one.
Space wise, you don't lose anything since it swaps the hot water heater and propane heater. With all three zones running, i have monitored DC power consumption to be 4.9Amps DC. A forced air propane heater consumes 9Amps DC during run time. A hot water heater adds to that. My previous fifth wheels had both of them and i monitor everything about electric power since in boondock a lot.
If you can, get it. I have had it in two different MHs and i am not buying another MH w/o it in the future.

RE: Onan 10k diesel overheating

Onan Model # 10HDCAA11506A
Air should have worked out of the coolant by now.
Although i am not sure how to check for air locks.
Checked under the generator for both air intake and exhaust
They are clean.

Onan 10k diesel overheating

During 95F weather it overheats and shuts down after
running for 30mins or so. The code shows 1, which is \
overheating
I am only running one roof AC, so the load is minimal
Generator has nearly 90Amps capacity and a single AC
is at most 20Amps at 95F
Diesel tank is full, so fuel level is not a problem
Fuel filter shouldn't be an issue, else it would have
shutdown within a few minutes of starting
The service on generator was done this summer
Coolant looks good and proper level
Oil looks good and proper level. Filter was changed.
When i stopped at a rest stop and opened the generator
compartment, it felt the generator was very hot.
So this cannot be an on board computer problem giving
me misdiagnosis since the generator was genuinely hot.
After the generator cooled down, i ran it again and it
ran fine w/o any shutdown. I can hear the fan running plus the outside air is flowing through which helps.
I am thinking, the coolant is not cooling properly and at a
critical temperature the engine shuts itself down.
What are the possible reasons i could look into?

Custom route weather for driving

I thought, i share this ...
If you are like me and want to know the weather en route to your destination, such as temperature, wind speed, precipitation at various
locations you will pass by (at various times of the day), try this link
to weather channel. Of course, this assumes you have internet connection.
I am not sure if such a custom weather report can be sent to the mobile phone and be updated as conditions change.
This helps me to avoid areas i shouldn't travel through.
For example, it was very windy (38mph from southeast) in I-90 SD and my TV antenna was flapping as much as my door awning in the motorhome. There was heavy rain ahead of me. I could have just stayed in a rest stop and ride this out. Based on the forecast, I decided to take I-29 towards Omaha and then onto I-80 instead and avoid the rain but face the headwind. I saved my antenna and awnings as well as didn't lose any travel times.

RE: What fire extinguisher do you have? Where do you keep it?

In case of a fire, i wonder how much time one has to even use these extinguishers.
By the time the fire is detected, it has been already burning for a few minutes.
I would save any life first and get the hell out. From what i have heard, in about 10minutes or so, entire MH will be in flames that cannot be fought with one or multiple dinky extinguishers that comes with the MH
On the other hand, an automatic fire monitoring system using cold-fire would act rightaway when the fire is detected, within less than a minute and put it out. But these systems are pricey. Check out http://rvsafetysystems.com/
I have no affiliation to them.

RE: Phaeton underpowered?

Rule of thumb: For every 100 lbs, you need 1 HP or less, when driving on a level road with no head wind and no load behind. Hence a 350HP engine is good for a 35000 lb MH (GVWR). The actual loaded weight of the MH is perhaps less usually by 2000 lbs or so. This gives you 20HP extra.
When you are pulling grades, this 20HP becomes handy.
When you have a headwind, this 20HP helps.
Also your rear gear ratio will be important for pulling toad behind.
Higher the gear ratio, better is your towing power. The gas mileage
will suffer though.
On the previous MH, I had a Cummins ISC 330 on a 33000 lb rig (weighed 30k loaded) and 4000 lb toad and it pulled just fine on level roads and grades up to 5-6%. Beyond that i had to slow down and keep an eye on all the gauges.
At higher altitudes (greater than 5000ft) i felt lack of performance unless i slowed down. I like to drive around 62mph. I felt that was the sweet spot on the 330.

RE: When did iPOD tech move to India ?

Speaking English and understanding it are two different things. Hello my name is David, BS his name isnt David it some Indian name.
hpk
Funny you say that..
When i asked an indian tech support about anglo names, they said that it is more for the american consumer as we feel comfortable addressing a david or a john rather than "Apu Nahasapeemapetilon" .
Several of my Chinese colleagues in the states adopted an anglo first name since it was difficult to pronounce their chinese names correctly.
I would rather pronounce a name right.

RE: When did iPOD tech move to India ?

If you want to support companies that outsource tech support out of the country that is your choice. I would rather buy products that actually have people that know the product and speak English like iPOD used to. Unlike the India tech support who do nothing more than go down the list on their computer screen and know nothing about the product. When they can't answer your question they either put you on endless hold or just cut you off.
Sorry to hear about your bad experience - endless hold or hang up.
I haven' had that bad of an experience yet while getting support from overseas.
I used to be in technical support in my younger days and i remember reading off the book or computer screen. Worked for a fortune 500 company in Austin, TX.
I still get put on endless hold while talking to tech support in the USA. I just try to call back later and get a different person to help
from. I try to be courteous and show patience.
I am not sure about you but i have worked primarily in a technology
community all my life, where majority of scientists and engineers are from overseas - including chinese, indians, russians, brits etc. So my expectation are somewhat different than yours. To me, they were smart and educated people and i never doubted their technical abilities.

RE: driving motorhome on highway 34 - Rocky Mts. National Park

I did it this summer w/toad. I would describe the road as a canyon-road.
We didn't see any other MH on the road and i wonder why...
We drove in a 41' DP w/16' toad behind on a cummins isc330
and stayed in Moraine campground inside RMNP.
We chose to come back via 36S and 66E to I-25.
Rt 36 was much better and had RV traffic as well as truckers.

RE: When did iPOD tech move to India ?

....I bought this iPOD because they used to have good English speaking tech support.....
As far as i remember, folks in India speak "english" just fine. They have a different accent, but it is "english" and they speak english with proper grammar, unlike us.
I have found that, with a little patience, I can understand their "english" just fine. If i don't understand, I politely ask them to repeat. After all i have to do the same, when getting fast food through a drive-thru window.
The way, economies of China and India is growing, someday, we will be on the phones providing their tech-support. I wonder if they will say the same about us :)
